Rusty Miller is a former USA Surfing Champion, (1965), a native southern Californian, born in La Jolla. Started surfing in In the early 70s he moved to Byron Bay. During the Aquarius Festival in 1972 he published the regions first alternative free newspaper, the Byron Express, and worked also for the new fledgling Tracks magazine with John Witzig, Albert Falzon and David Elfick. A trip to Bali later that year featured him in the first surfing filmed at the now renowned Ulu Watu, Morning of the Earth. This production introduced Australians and then the international surfing world to the magic of Indonesian quality waves.
Since 1984 Rusty has produced the Byron Bay Holiday Guide each year, as a free booklet in A5 format. This souvenir for locals and visitors portrays the spirit, feeling and contemporary pulse of Byron through images, stories, handy clues and ads that connect you to our world of innovative lifestyle adventures. Here in Byron you are allowed to bring one's dreams into everyday life animation and living magic by exercising and balancing your physical and mental endeavours. Rusty has been conducting personalised surfing instruction (one or two people) since 1973. He teaches people how to learn what he calls Hawaiian Surfboard Riding. Its a physical rhythm technique and introduction to surfings history and philosophy. His one liner is: You get one lesson and then its a lifetime of surfing homework....
