Short and stocky, focused and strong Dru had a most quick and nimble beautiful style and seemed to stick to his board easily. This was a good quality in surfing competition before leg ropes. His style was easily and naturally able to cross over to short boards. Mike Purpus describes: “He would carve up the face, switch stance at the lip, and float back down”. Dru was a charismatic, soulful, smooth and radical surfer. It made him a champion and a legend. He passed away several years ago in Hawaii.
