Ted Spencer tuning his board
In many ways Ted Spencer is the mystery man of the short board revolution. He was quiet, humble, very soft spoken and often innocuous. His focus, love and hunger was his total involvement with waves and his constant pursuit of better performing surfboards. He was constantly shaping and riding, tuning discussing and physically feeling boards. Here he is on the grass tufts at Lennox Point, sanding block in hand ‘tuning’ the tail and rail edges before going out for a session. His sensitivity was extreme. Although sometimes mentioned, Spencer’s contribution to design and advancement towards what is now labeled the Short Board Revolution is unjustly understated. There was never a more humble non- commercial or attention seeking pure soul than Ted Spencer.
